The Origin of the Data: A 2019 Scouting Mission
Before birauta.com was a digital encyclopedia, it was a personal mission to document the true scale of the Pokhara Valley. In April 2019, We set out from Birauta Chowk with a simple goal: to visit and map all eight lakes in a single day without a guide. The logistics below are not copied from a brochure; they are the raw results of that 50+ kilometer journey. Whether you are a solo trekker or a curious local, use this table to plan your own expedition across the valley’s diverse waters.

1. Phewa Lake (Phewa Tal)

The iconic heart of Pokhara. Famous for its mirror-like reflection of Mount Machhapuchhre and the Tal Barahi island temple. It is the center of the city’s tourism, boating, and evening cultural Aarati.

2. Begnas Lake (Begnas Tal)

A peaceful escape located about 15km from the city. Begnas is known for its clear, calm waters and traditional fish farming. It offers a much more “natural” and quiet experience than Phewa Lake.

3. Rupa Lake (Rupa Tal)

The “Twin” of Begnas, separated only by a forested ridge. Rupa is a biodiversity hotspot, home to many species of birds and a thriving community-led fishery.

4. Khaste Lake

Known locally as the “Bird Wetland,” Khaste is a paradise for birdwatchers. This lake is surrounded by lush agricultural land and is a critical habitat for migratory birds.

5. Dipang Lake

Often called the “Honeymoon Lake” due to its secluded and romantic setting. It is famous for its beautiful wild lotuses and the panoramic views of the Himalayas in the background.

6. Gude Lake

A smaller, serene lake near Khaste. It is primarily used for lotus farming and fishing, offering a raw look at the traditional lakeside life of the Pokhara Valley.

8. Niureni Lake

A hidden gem tucked away in the Lekhnath area. It is rarely visited by tourists, making it the perfect spot for those looking for absolute silence and untouched nature.

7. Maidi Lake

The smallest of the Lekhnath lakes. While it is partially covered by aquatic plants and lotuses, it remains a vital ecological spot for local wildlife and quiet meditation.
